La Cruz de Huanacaxtle
In just the few short months that we've been in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, Mexico, we've fallen in love with it. 16 miles north of Puerto Vallarta, It is a small fishing town of 1,600 people who are kind, helpful and accepting. Many cruisers come through here during the winter and spring months and then set off to cruise the Sea of Cortez or take off across the ocean. While we are leaving in a few days, we will definitely be back in the fall. We love the safe community and welcoming cruisers here.
There are often festivals, markets and events happening in and near the plaza. Fishermen bring in their catch daily to the Mercado del Mar where you can buy snapper, dorado and tuna just after it has been caught. It's an easy $1 bus ride into Puerto Vallarta and the big stores. But I enjoy going to the butcher, produce market, tortilleria and other specialty shops in La Cruz daily to see what is fresh and to talk with locals.
One of the best things about this town is the number of cruisers with kids and teens. We have found great kids who are all open, accepting and kind. Jack and Hailey were immediately included and fit in perfectly. Most of the cruiser kids have taken off for the summer to cruise the northern part of the Sea of Cortez, but they'll be back in the Fall and Winter.
We're leaving this week to head into the heart of Puerto Vallarta for hurricane season. There are benefits to being there (proximity to the airport, movie theaters, bigger stores, variety of restaurants), but we are going to miss La Cruz for a few months.
